Independent Research by Design

Black Book Research is structured to deliver vendor-agnostic market research, stakeholder surveying, competitive intelligence, and performance assessments across healthcare technology, software, managed services, outsourcing, and related industries. Our research organization includes experienced healthcare and technology analysts, survey managers, research editors, data-validation specialists, methodology professionals, and operational support teams.

Independence is not simply an editorial objective; it is embedded in our research model, staffing practices, fieldwork controls, and separation of commercial and analytical functions.

Black Book does not permit an evaluated vendor, service provider, investor, consultant, or other interested party to sponsor, purchase, negotiate, or otherwise influence a survey result, score, ranking, award, editorial conclusion, or published assessment. Organizations cannot pay to improve their standing, suppress unfavorable findings, obtain preferential placement, preapprove survey questions, select respondents, alter scoring criteria, or influence the interpretation of collected data.

The purchase of a report, subscription, data product, directory service, reprint, or other commercial offering provides no influence over research outcomes. Participation in a Black Book survey or evaluation is not conditioned on purchasing a subscription, consulting engagement, advertising package, licensing arrangement, or other service.

Any attempt to affect respondent selection, fieldwork, scoring, analysis, publication timing, or editorial conclusions is treated as a potential threat to research independence and is escalated through the appropriate internal review process.

Experienced Analysts and Survey Managers
Black Book maintains demanding professional standards for the individuals responsible for research design, survey administration, analysis, validation, and editorial review.

Staff analysts and survey managers are generally required to hold a master’s degree and meet at least one of the following professional-experience standards:

  • A minimum of seven years of healthcare information technology experience; or
  • A minimum of five years of market-research experience involving healthcare, information technology, or enterprise software markets.
Our Staff 1

These standards are intended to ensure that Black Book personnel understand not only research methodology, but also the operational realities of healthcare delivery, technology implementation, software procurement, managed services, cybersecurity, interoperability, revenue-cycle operations, data analytics, and other specialized markets covered by our research.

Our survey managers are responsible for coordinating fieldwork activities that may include distributing participation invitations, managing outreach campaigns, publicizing authorized Qualtrics survey links, monitoring response volumes, supporting respondent-qualification procedures, reviewing sample composition, and helping ensure adequate participation across relevant professional roles, market segments, and geographic regions.

Since 2011, Black Book survey operations have generated more than three million verified responses. This includes more than 500,000 responses during 2024, representing healthcare and technology stakeholders across approximately 110 countries. The scale and diversity of this participation help Black Book identify meaningful patterns in customer experience, user satisfaction, product performance, implementation outcomes, purchasing priorities, and emerging market requirements.

Protected Research Personnel

To protect the integrity of active fieldwork and reduce the risk of lobbying, pressure, inducements, or other outside influence, Black Book does not routinely disclose the identities or direct contact information of individual polling managers, survey managers, or research editors through its public website, vendor directories, marketing materials, or general contact channels.

When professional attribution is appropriate, the names of responsible research personnel may appear within the specific research document, methodology statement, editorial credits, disclosure page, or study record to which those individuals contributed. This provides document-level accountability without creating unrestricted access to the personnel responsible for active surveys, scoring, validation, or editorial review.

This policy is not intended to limit legitimate communication. It creates a documented and orderly channel through which questions can be directed to the appropriate member of the research organization while helping protect staff members from improper efforts to affect research in progress.

All research-related questions, methodology inquiries, requests for clarification, vendor responses, proposed corrections, media questions, and comments concerning published or active research should be submitted to: research@blackbookmarketresearch.com

The appropriate management team member will review the inquiry and either respond directly or assign a qualified analyst, editor, survey manager, or staff representative to provide a reply. This centralized process helps Black Book maintain an auditable record of substantive communications and ensures that inquiries are handled by personnel with the appropriate subject-matter authority.

Survey Verification and Quality Controls

Black Book research incorporates multiple layers of internal and third-party quality control. Depending on the study, these procedures may include:

  • Respondent identity and professional-role verification
  • Eligibility screening against defined study criteria
  • Duplicate-response and data-quality reviews
  • Examination of anomalous, inconsistent, or outlier responses
  • Follow-up inquiries when additional validation is required
  • Review of completion patterns and response integrity
  • Geographic, organizational, and professional-segment checks
  • Separation of respondent recruitment from final scoring and editorial analysis; and
  • Internal review by qualified Black Book employees before publication.

No single control can eliminate every potential source of error or bias. The purpose of this layered process is to strengthen data integrity, identify irregularities, support reproducibility, and maintain a defensible research record.

Black Book does not sell respondent identities to evaluated vendors or provide vendors with unrestricted access to individual participants. Research findings are generally reported in aggregate or in accordance with the confidentiality and disclosure terms established for the applicable study.

Independent Operational Partners

Black Book outsources selected operational functions to specialized third-party firms as part of its separation-of-duties model. This structure supports transparent recordkeeping, independent verification, operational scalability, data accuracy, and audit integrity.

Black Book currently works with 22 survey-panel and global participant-recruitment firms that assist with identifying and recruiting qualified survey candidates. Depending on the study, these firms may support:

  • Respondent sourcing and panel management
  • Professional and organizational eligibility screening
  • Geographic and demographic coverage
  • Specialized healthcare and technology participant recruitment
  • Multinational fieldwork
  • Survey distribution and participation support
  • Language and regional coordination
  • Response authentication and
  • Documentation supporting subsequent data-quality review.

These firms assist with respondent recruitment and survey administration; they do not determine Black Book scores, rankings, conclusions, or editorial findings. Final analytical decisions remain subject to Black Book’s methodology, validation standards, and research-management controls.

Many operational positions associated with panel management, respondent recruitment, fieldwork support, verification, translation, data processing, and related activities are therefore filled through contractual engagements with vetted and appropriately qualified third-party firms. In applicable jurisdictions and disciplines,

In applicable jurisdictions and disciplines, Black Book gives preference to providers that maintain relevant professional accreditations, documented quality standards, privacy controls, and audit capabilities.

This operating model allows Black Book to obtain specialized expertise without concentrating respondent recruitment, survey administration, validation, scoring, and publication authority within a single department or organization. It also creates additional checkpoints between the collection of survey responses and the publication of final research findings.

A Distributed Global Team

Black Book’s editors, researchers, analysts, and operations professionals work from the company’s Tampa, Florida office and across 15 remote locations worldwide. This distributed staffing model gives Black Book access to specialized healthcare, technology, research, language, and regional expertise while maintaining a cost-conscious and collaborative operating structure.

Our remote and third-party teams work under defined research protocols, confidentiality requirements, information-security procedures, and quality-control standards. Access to respondent information, active survey data, preliminary findings, and proprietary methodologies is limited according to assigned responsibilities.

Black Book’s staffing model reflects the managed-services and outsourcing disciplines that have long informed the organization’s work. Founded by Douglas Brown, co-author of Wiley’s The Black Book of Outsourcing, the company applies practical experience in global service delivery, vendor governance, operational separation, and performance measurement to its own research operations.

No Pay-to-Play Evaluation Model

Black Book does not charge vendors simply to be considered, surveyed, evaluated, scored, ranked, or included in an eligible market assessment. Evaluated organizations are not required to purchase reports, subscriptions, consulting services, advertising, reprints, directory placement, or licensing rights as a condition of participation or inclusion.

Black Book also avoids high-pressure sales practices designed to convert research participation into mandatory commercial purchases. Our limited order-processing and client-services functions are focused on fulfilling legitimate customer requests, providing access to available research, and responding to subscriber needs—not pressuring evaluated organizations to pay for recognition or favorable treatment.

Vendors and other interested parties may purchase completed research under applicable commercial terms. Such purchases do not provide access to confidential respondents, unpublished response-level data, proprietary validation records, or the ability to modify a score, ranking, award, assessment, or editorial conclusion.

This separation between research and commercial activity is central to Black Book’s credibility. It helps ensure that our competitive intelligence and market assessments remain useful to healthcare organizations, technology buyers, investors, consultants, policymakers, and other stakeholders who rely on evidence that has not been shaped by the financial interests of the organizations being evaluated.

Employment and Professional Opportunities

Employment inquiries may be submitted to: hr@blackbookmarketresearch.com
Candidates may also apply through active Black Book job postings published on LinkedIn or Indeed. Applications should be submitted through the process specified in the applicable posting so that credentials, professional experience, educational qualifications, location requirements, and any work samples can be reviewed by the appropriate hiring team.

Because Black Book engages specialized third-party firms for many operational functions, some opportunities related to survey-panel management, respondent recruitment, fieldwork, validation support, translation, data processing, and administrative services may be offered through those partner organizations rather than as direct Black Book employment. Candidates should review each posting carefully to determine the employing or contracting organization.

Unsolicited employment inquiries should be directed to the human-resources mailbox rather than to survey managers, research editors, analysts, or the research-inquiries address.

The appropriate management team member will review each message and respond directly or assign a qualified staff member to address the inquiry. Direct access to individual survey managers, polling managers, research editors, or confidential respondent information is not provided through the general inquiry process.
